Thanks to all of the Razor listeners who stopped out. I think the highlight of the night was Get R Done starting on fire and smoking out the place. My kids and I loved it! I hope the Giants and Patriots beat each other up. I don't particularly care for either team. I think the Giants will win though. They want it more.

Can you believe the Milwaukee Bucks? They took it to Lebron and crew again. Brandon Jennings had a stellar game, including an "in your face" three pointer right after he had drained one right before it. Unbelieveable! Let's hope they keep it up! I wish I would have gotten in on the bus trip our sister station The Score was putting together! Next time!

Onto the real Super Weekend part:

I'll be at Monster Trucks XL at the Brown County Arena Friday night from 5-7. I'll be there to make sure everyone is hyped for the destruction and carnage that will go down that night. It's a great family event. My daughter even wants to go this year!

Saturday night during Over the Edge I will be playing the entire new Lamb of God cd, Resolution. If you haven't gotten this release yet, prepare to be crushed!! Over the Edge is on every Saturday night from 9-11. Over the Edge--We rule the pit!!

Directly following Over the Edge is the Local Edge. This week will be part two of focus on the new cd from Candy Machine Guns. I'll be throwing on 5 more songs off the disc. Then you'll know what all the excitement is about this band. It features Tim (formerly of Profane) and Hobbs (formerly of 9mm Solution). They combine forces to deliver a killer debut cd. Make sure you check it out!

I heard that Todd Tousey is back in the area. I need to get in touch with him. I want him to put out another Antagonist cd!!!!

cd pick of the day---Drunk Horse--Adult Situations This is rawk n roll at it's finest. Just the amount of success they've had, with three different singers is impressive. Who will be lead singer #4? By the way, raise your hand if you're a sinner! Nobody noticed I was gone, by the way. Thanks! Anyhow, we did the Disney thing. They were filming their holiday special to air on Christmas day while we were there (it's not live? Shocking!). Being the Radio/TV/Film nerd that I am, we had to check it out. The first day, Scotty McCreery (sp) and Jennifer Hudson were performing their Christmas songs. I seriously thought about trying to start a circle pit while Hudson performed Joy to the World, but I knew I would get a lifetime ban from the Magic Kingdom. Classic line from my wife as I told her about wanting to start the circle pit. "I have no idea what you're talking about." So there we were in Disney as I explained to her the crazy dancing in a circle along with the brutality that goes on at metal shows. I did throw the devil horns up. I can't wait to see if that footage gets on the air. The second day, the rumors were true. Justin Bieber was there, doing a two song medley. The teenage girls were going crazy. I couldn't bring myself to fake enthusiasm during his songs, no matter how many tv cameras were filming. He filmed his stuff a couple of times and he was gone. Never in my life did I think I'd see Justin Bieber or Jennifer Hudson in concert. I think my last vacation was way cooler when Avenged Sevenfold, Hellyeah, New Medicine, Halestorm, and others were performing at the arena right next to the hotel I was staying at. Much better!

cd pick of the day--Hank III Attention Deficit Domination Hank III gets heavy on this one. I know I'll miss seeing KB playing bass and screaming along with the words of the songs. Hopefully they will have some replacements soon.

Now the good--Nonpoint recently signed to Razor & Tie records and are working on a new cd. I'm curious what direction they are headed with the lineup change.

Nonpoint played the Taste of Madison in September. It was estimated that 6,000 people were there. Where's the love for Nonpoint in the Valley? Nonpoint was one of the first Razor bands. I'm trying to remember how many times they played Ryan's and the Riverside ballroom in Green Bay. Killer shows every time. What a day what a day what a day....

cd pick of the day--New Medicine--Race you to the Bottom You need to check out this disc. Beefcake The Mighty) has released the following statement to BLABBERMOUTH.NET:"After much soul searching and consideration, and with a heavy heart, I am announcing my departure from GWAR (yes, again). I simply can no longer devote the time and effort required to maintain my position within the group. I have so many projects going on now in Texas, including a new RIGOR MORTIS record in the works, that it just wouldn't be fair to everyone involved for me to stay and not be able to give 100%. I'll miss the insanity and playing with my brothers, but I have to do what's right for me right now."I wish GWAR and all my brothers the best, and if I can ever be of any help to the group, they know they have only to ask. I appreciate their understanding, and certainly hope the fans will understand as well. I truly appreciate the opportunity I was given to return to the band and record the last two albums and to tour with them over the last several years, but it's time to aim my creative energies in other directions and embrace the opportunities that have been laid before me. I promise you have not heard the last of me. Not by a long shot!"

My opinion: While this won't be the end of Gwar by any means (it would take Oderous leaving), it still sucks. Macho Man was an awesome wrestler and performer. His match from Wrestlemania 3 with Ricky Steamboat is one of the greatest of all time. If you have never seen it, go find a copy of it right now and enjoy! I am not suprised by all of the outpouring of condolences from fellow wrestlers, but I am a little amazed by the tributes from places like ESPN. They don't typically mention wrestling at all. The segment I saw even talked about how they are tremendous athletes! The only interaction I came close to having with the Macho Man was back in the day at UW-Oshkosh. I'm the big fanboy who would sit out back and wait for the wrestlers to show up and ask for autographs. I know, I'm a huge nerd. Macho Man was the big star of the show. They had campus security escort him to and from his car, so I never got his autograph, but I did get some sweet photos from about 3 feet away. I will have to do some searching and find them so I can post them online. There will only be one Macho Man. Hopefully now the WWE will do the right thing and induct him into their Hall of Fame. So, take some time and watch some classic Macho Man matches and snap into a Slim Jim in his honor!

On a side note, I know it's been said before, but it's sad how many of the wrestlers I grew up on have passed on to the big ring in the sky. Yes, I actually did go to college for broadcasting. Was it worth it? In some aspects yes, in others no. I've seen guys with no experience come in off the street and get a job (Rex--you live across the street from me!). I could have saved a lot of time and pursued a career years earlier. On the other hand, I wouldn't have met my wife, made lifelong friends (Ross, Wade, Nate, etc...), and had countless memorable experiences. I think that overcomes any negatives. A lot has changed in the time since I've graduated. My mullet is gone. I have a wife, kids, and a dog. Stuff I never thought about much in those days. I guess that you never know what life is going to give you, but everything gets you ready for the next step. It's not often you can remember what you were doing 15 years ago. The anticipation has been building all week and everyone is fired up. That's right. It's almost time for another edition of Over the Edge. This week, check out new bangers from:

Bronx Casket Co
EkoTren
Grand Magus
Kings Destroy
Helstar

Plus, tune in for your chance to text in to win tickets to As I lay Dying. That show is at the Riverside Ballroom in Green Bay on February 17. Winds of Plague and After the Burial are the openers. Metal in Green Bay!! Over the Edge in on Saturdays from 9 to 11 pm.

Something else must be going on this weekend too. Hmmmmmmmm I seem to recall something about a football game. They should really start hyping these things. I really hope the Packers come out and dominate from the get go. Don't give the Bears any openings. I expect it to be a good game. If the Packers would happen to falter, it would be a huge let down. It would also make a lot of so called experts look silly. Let's keep hoping we are Super Bowl bound! I envision the Packers and the Steelers for the crown. That would be epic!~

cd pick of the day--Buckcherry--Timebomb I haven't listened to this in a long time. It is called All American Nightmare. I was not planning on listening to this cd at all, but I always like listening to new music, so I figured I'd give it a shot. Let me tell you that this is a great cd. They come out swinging with 2 Sides of Me and All American Nightmare before they get introspective with What Ya Gonna Do. That song should be released as the next single. The songs Waking Up the Devil and Striptease are among the other standout rockers on this disc. There really isn't a big power ballad such as Lips of an Angel on this disc. I guess the closest they get is The Life and Everybody's Wrong. Even those songs have a heavier vibe to them. They also have a little fun with the songs Hey Ho and Put that Record On. This is a pretty solid disc. The heavier songs remind me of Motley Crue's Saints of Los Angeles cd. It has that type of groove to it. If you like Saliva and Buckcherry, you should have no problem liking the new Hinder cd. I know that this is not the most in depth album review ever, but I'm sure most people don't really care about the chord progression of whatever song and just want to know if it rocks or not. It does rock! It reminds me of a cd I'd put on to get in the mood before going out and partying. Give it a listen!

cd pick of the day--Queens of the Stone Age--Over the River... I knew the vacation was going to be a great time when the first night I got to see Avenged Sevenfold! We pulled into the town we were staying in and right next to our hotel was an arena. I knew there was a concert going on when we got close because of the dozen tour buses. I freaked out as a read the sign. Avenged Sevenfold, Hellyeah, Stone Sour, Sick Puppies, Halestorm, My Darkest Days, and New Medicine were playing. We got into town too late to see anyone but Avenged, but that didn't bother me. It was right next door. I tucked in the wife and kids and was on my way. Thanks to some guys extra ticket, I got into the show. It was in between sets, so I decided to go check out the place. I talked with Bri-dog from the Hellyeah crew (he probably thinks I'm odd because I recoginzed him from the Hellyeah dvd). We discussed the tour and the upcoming football season. Those Texans really love their Cowboys! The Packers must shut them down. I also talked with Lizzie Hale about Lou Brutus. She thinks he's pretty funny. Chad from Hellyeah/Mudvayne told me that they want to play in Green Bay soon (someone make that happen). He also said that Mudvayne wasn't done (I don't totally believe that). I saw Greg from Hellyeah/Mudvayne dressed as a southern hippie, complete with a "Southern Rebel" handband. Really? Peoria isn't the south. Whatever. Just keep coming up with the crunchy riffs. A lot of the bands came out and watched the start of Avenged's set. If you go see them, pay attention in the beginning and watch your head. I won't ruin the suprise for you. Even Vinnie Paul was out. I wonder if he was watching Mike Portnay and comparing drum styles. Avenged are totally rock stars now. They had tons of pyro, multiple backdrop changes, and a full on stage show. A number one record will help the record company throw some money towards your tour. They had the crowd in the palm of their hand. As my night ended, I ran into Sal from My Darkest Days. I asked him about how he got Chad from Nickelback and Zakk Wylde on their new song. He spilled the info about how he's been writing with Chad for a couple of years and it just worked out. Zakk hopped on board with a little coaxing from management. Sal was freaking out about how in a couple of weeks they are playing a show together and Zakk might join them onstage. It's cool to see a musician get excited about things like that yet. Sal told me how they were all playing a big festival the next day and invited me down to see it. He even gave me his cell phone number. It's 315-313-xxxx. I'm not giving it out! I told him I would try to check it out, but vacationing with the family was on the top of my list. I filled him in on some the places to play in Green Bay, so hopefully they'll make it out this way.

Do I wish I could have seen all the bands? In a perfect world, yes. But given the situation, I was happy to have stumbled on this show and got to see what I saw. It was a great start to the family vacation.

cd pick of the day--Aversion--Fit to be tied

New Music

In my head I hear a fanfare when I say the words new music.

There has been quite a few new releases out recently. Here is a few on my thoughts on them.

Hellyeah--Stampede

This cd has some really heavy moments. Hell of a Time, Debt that all men pay, and Cowboy Way are a great way to start off the album. I feel embarassed for them for writing Pole Dancer. That one I could do without. I have no problem with Hellyeah, but I have a hard time taking Chad and Gregg seriously. To go from Mudvayne to being cowboys? Aren't they from Peoria? Weird.

Nonpoint--Miracle

Nonpoint play it pretty safe on the new cd. Nothing too over the top agressive. They keep in the mainstream on this one. They cover Pantera's Five Minutes Alone and I think that they should have left it alone. I don't think any band can duplicate the feel of the original. They do score points with me for Lucky #13 and Frontlines. I would like to see Nonpoint turn it up a notch and not play it so safe

Deftones--Diamond Eyes

I was pleasantly suprised by the new Deftones cd. It's been a long time since I've heard anything new from the band and was not sure how this would be. It turns out it is heavy, grinding, and Chino's vocals are as smooth as ever. Deftones keep it short and to the point on this cd. I think it clocks in around 40 minutes. No wasted time on this one!

Chimaira--Coming Alive

Chimaira have released a live three disc set. 2 dvds, 1 cd. I don't receive the dvds, but the live cd is crushing. Recorded in their hometown of Cleveland, Chimaira own on this cd. I really I wish I could have been at this show to witness their domination.

Texas Hippie Coalition--Intervention
Some steel belted metal from Big Daddy Rich and crew. Solid songs throughout, but some weak lyrics in spots. If you like Black Label Society, Brand New Sin, and C.O.C., you should like this. Pissed off and mad about it is an instant classic

cd pick of the day--dead horse--peaceful death and pretty flowers. Kataklysm=awesome. Death metal at 10 in the morning baby! Skeletonwitch and Goatwhore are badass too! Plus Kingdom of Sorrow and Drowning Pool! I'm suprised Drowning Pool didn't make the jump to the main stage. Speaking of which, Nonpoint on the main stage is great news for them. That should widen their fan base some more. Devildriver will freak out the people that are just there for Motley, Halford, and Ozzy. The final three are legends and will put on a solid show.

3. It was a great time with lots of wrecked cars. I don't know if I've ever seen a monster truck get stuck on something before. Then again, a conversion van is a big kind of something. Bearfoot is definitely the star of the show! My son's eyes almost popped out of his head at some of the tricks the motocross guys were pulling off.

Nascar action got underway with the Bud Shootout. It would have been a big shootout had it not been for Jeff Gordon spinning out Biffle. Thanks for ruining a great finish Jeff! The Daytona 500 is less than a week away!

The Super Bowl was an excellent game. If a few plays went the other way, it could have been an entirely different outcome. Regardless, both teams played superbly and you couldn't ask for anything more. The commercials were pretty good. Budweiser has waaaaay too much money based on how many ads they bought. Incredible!!

With the American Carnage tour on hold (Slayer, Megadeth, Testament) due to Slayer's Tom Araya needing back surgery, Megadeth has booked a filler tour that will bring the old schooler out in you. Not only are these three thrash legends touring together, they have some suprises. Megadeth are going to perform their masterpiece Rust in Peace from front to back along with some other Megadeth classics. Testament served notice and said that they are going to play their debut album The Legacy. I expect Exodus to add to the mix by performing Bonded by Blood completely. If you are a fan of thrash, these are exciting times. The downside is that there are not any Wisconsin dates for either of these tours. I would love to see this at the Riverside. Head walking, stage diving, and all out thrashing would be in effect! Somebody make this happen!!

cd pick of the day--Napalm Death--Time Waits for No Slave. It is amazing to have that much music all in one place. I almost always have mine on shuffle, unless I feel like listening to all the songs from one particular artist. Sometimes it seems like it doesn't shuffle very well. A lot of the same songs will come up and it does get stagnant. I decided to try something different. I took the shuffle off and challenged myself to listen to all of the songs in my library in alphabetical order. It was awesome. I kept trying to guess what might come next (and usually failed). I kept track of how many songs in a row were from the same artist. Suicidal Tendencies were the kings with 5 in a row. Slayer had 4 in a row twice. I have three songs named Heaven and Hell, all done by different people (Black Sabbath, Circus of Power, and Madball). I have a couple of songs on twice that I didn't know about. I'm hoping that now that I played all of the songs, they will all shuffle in. If not, I'll do it again.

I had a blast at the Gamblers game last Friday. I took the wife and kids to see the Trans Siberian Orchestra at the Resch. It was the first time my kids have been to a rock show. And yes, I did say rock. Even though they mix it with some classical style music, it most definitely rocks! There was head banging, pyro, crazy light shows, and fake smoke. The only thing missing was a mosh pit, but I don't think the grannies sitting up front would have liked it too much if I would have tried to start one. The kids liked it. They both started to do a little headbanging on their own! I'll have to put a stop to that sooner or later. I wouldn't want them to turn out like me! I know the tour has passed already, but if you get the chance, go check out the T.S.O. They played for three hours, so you get your money's worth. It wasn't all Christmas music either, even though that is the main focus of the show. I just love that some heavy metal guys figured out a way to make oodles of cash off of Christmas music.

cd pick of the day: Johnny Cash--Live at San Quentin

Let me be the first...

to say...What's with all of the Christmas stuff already? Over the weekend I was in a store and I walked by a display. It was playing a catchy tune and soon I realized that it was a Christmas song. I looked back and there were Christmas trees, ornaments, etc... Unreal. I've barely seen many Halloween items. I don't need Christmas pushed down my throat so soon. I guess the desire to get some extra money out of the Christmas season is what fuels it. I want a music revolution. When is the next big movement going to happen? Not to slight any of the new rock bands out there now, but how many of them will really make their mark on the music scene? I'm talking long term, not just having a couple of hit songs. What will be the next big thing? Hair metal is done, now it's just nostalgia. Metal will always be metal. It will flirt with the mainstream occasionally, but never take it over. Just a couple of bands will make the jump. Rap metal/nu-metal had a limited shelf life. Grunge came and went. Only a few bands survived that too. I want something new and exciting!! What will it be? It is time for a revolution!!!

cd pick of the day--metallica--reload I know it's popular to slag this disc, but there are some good songs on it! I stole the following article off of blabbermouth. I've wanted to post this for a while, but it was right around Dime's birthday, so it didn't feel right. My thoughts follow the interview.

On March 16, 2009, former PANTERA and current DOWN singer Philip Anselmo spoke passionately and candidly about his music career and his history with — and the dangers of — drugs, particularly heroin, during an appearance at the Loyola University in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Several portions of the question-and-answer session have been transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET and follow below.

On his drug-abuse history:

Anselmo: "There is no reason, really, that I can point to [for why I started doing drugs]. I am extremist when it comes to everything. Anything I set my mind to, I am an absolute extremist — I cannot say it any better. And I was injured; I had a back injury from... And I don't suggest anyone do this, but I would climb up on top of PA systems and dive head first either into the waiting crowd or into the waiting concrete; it made no difference. I would attack — I would attack on stage, and I paid for it. I ultimately injured myself, and like putting a Band-Aid over a cancer... When you rupture a disk in your back, it begins this thing called degenerative disk disease, so that means the next one's going, and, obviously, the next one after that, and so on and so forth. Well, I think it was about the time when the record [PANTERA's 1994 album, 'Far Beyond Driven'] came in at No. 1. I was pretty terrified. I was happy as hell; don't get me wrong, man — I was like, 'Oh, my God, yes!' At that point, I had just gotten back from the doctor — [from having] my second MRI [done] — and I realized I had two blown-out disks. Now, in order for me to be this Superman that the media had built me out to be, I had to quell that pain. So I started off with regular painkillers and muscle relaxers. Eventually, you climb up the painkiller ladder, because painkillers lie to you; they will magnify that injury. And that's all that's on your mind — the injury and painkillers. Up the ladder I went — stronger painkillers, stronger painkillers, stronger painkillers — and you hear, and you damn well know, when your audience is looking at you different, when your bandmembers are looking at you different — 'Man, what is wrong with Phil? What is wrong with Phil?' — you get a little tired; you get weary of it. You feel like this 20-something-year-old — which I was — juggernaut, man; you wanna leap out of your skin, but you can't anymore — you can't just hang out anymore, because it hurts to hang out, or you're too loaded. And once everyone starts laying this trip on you, that's when you close the door and the needle slides in. And from that point on, you are on your own, you're on a ride, and I wouldn't suggest on anyone in this room — I wouldn't suggest on my worst enemy — this particular ride."

On whether he felt the record label glorified the drug use:

Anselmo: "Absolutely not. Normally, the record company is out of the loop, the last to know. They're mechanics. I'll tell you what happens, though. When you're signed to a big record contract — which I don't even know if it really exists anymore today; the music system is so different — but back in the '90s, when you had a record contract, you had publicists, you had a million different tentacles and satellites that were doing work for you. But normally, a publicist is the one who pushes you to have your face on the cover of these magazines — the Kurt Cobains, the Layne Staleys... Rest in peace, by the way. And me — destroyed, drug-riddled, pathetic, yellow — right there on the cover of magazines, and... you had no choice but to submit and be put under a microscope. And hey, it's a chapter of your life, man — it don't go away. And they will glorify you; when you're on top of the world, they will make you — the media, that is — they will make you... MTV, magazines, VH1 — it don't matter — they'll make you Superman. But once Superman stumbles, it's kind of like the old adage, man: Once you get big enough for your head to see over that fence, that's when people start throwing rocks at it. Once Superman trips up, man, they will judge your talent, your accomplishments, and your trip-ups, and solidify your entire life in one paragraph. And it hurts. It hurts, 'cause you know they don't know you. They don't really know you; they don't know the struggles, they don't know what it's like. Most writers and media people are wannabe musicians, anyway, that can't do it. And that's the truth."

On whether he still mistrusts the media:

Anselmo: "Absolutely. Absolutely. Because... Straight-up, man... Case in point: When PANTERA was breaking up, I was a wounded animal. My will was defeated. I could be drug one way or another. I started another band, side band — SUPERJOINT RITUAL — that turned into this other thing when PANTERA was hanging, and then this media thing. A war of words via black-and-white sentences. You sit there and you read it... Now, basically, what happened was I did this particular interview with this cat [referring to a Metal Hammer interview that was published in December 2004, just a few days before PANTERA guitarist Dimebag was murdered. — Ed.], and on the way out, we're walking off the bus, he's behind me, and he's like, 'Man, I hope this doesn't get out of hand between you and Dimebag and Vinnie.' He goes, 'Man, what would happen if they jumped you or something like that?' Got mad at me or jumped me — a very hypothetical thing. The way I speak, you know... I said something to the effect of, 'I'd kill those boys; they can't fight me. I'd kill them boys.' You read that in black and white — 'I'd kill those boys' — and it is as literal as a mofo; it is literal. And they took it very literally. And the media ran with that, man — all over the world, man. In different languages. And at that point, there's no more... There is a rift. So, yes, I don't trust the media at all unless I have to sit there and really think of a concrete answer. You can't wear your emotions on your sleeve around the media, and I do wear my emotions on my sleeve, big-time."

****Editor's Note: BLABBERMOUTH.NET contacted U.K.'s Metal Hammer magazine after this article was first posted and they have confirmed that the interview in question that Anselmo is referring to in this story (see above) was actually done over the phone.****

On whether he feels that when all that started happening, he turned more to heroin to get through the tough times:

Anselmo: "No way. I was already knee-deep in heroin, neck-deep in heroin. That made no difference. It didn't make me turn any which way or another. If anything, it made me wanna pick that phone up and go, 'Wait a minute, Dimebag. Wait a minute, Vince. This is taken way out of hand, bro.' But there was no answer at the other end of the phone, and they weren't calling me either."

On whether it was his will that eventually got him to stop picking up the needle or stop using altogether:

Anselmo: "That's a tough question right there. Once you close the door and slide that needle in, heroin is the great controller of all — every single goddamn thing you do. The way you sleep, the way you wake up in the morning and your hands reach over pathetically to get your first fix of the day, which gets you out of bed. As a matter of fact, heroin, in a nutshell... When I say it controls everything, I mean everything. People think painkillers and things like that are only numbing out pain?! You take them for long enough, they start numbing out your emotion, man. And once your emotion is numbed out, then you are controlled. It's got you. It's the most important thing in your life, whether it be this tiny little pill or this funny dust. And you're trading your family, your brothers and your sisters, the brothers and sisters you call friends on the street — lifelong friends — you'll stab them in the back, you'll break their hearts, and you won't even know it."

"You're not getting high anymore. It's fear that controls you. Because once you start chasing your own tail... There's two points here. Especially as a musician, once you start something — a band; something that's from your heart, something that's organic, from you — and I was lucky enough to have this success... I don't know about luck; I broke my back for what I believed in. I bled for my music, man. But heroin... when I say it controls all, I wasn't singing anymore about levels of confidence and power and walking and all these songs of positivity, I was singing about dope. It even comes out in your lyrics, man; it comes out in your music. You go back and listen to it, and it's like, 'Oh, my God.' You lost yourself. Yup, you sure did. You chase your tail. It's fear. The junkie fears the sickness, the illness, 'cause dope-sick ain't fun, bro. It's miserable. And the only thing that cleans it up and fixes it up is more dope. Unless you are genius enough — like I was — to start taking methadone. Once you start taking methadone, it's over for 90 percent of people. They live their lives to wake up at 9 a.m., go to the methadone clinic, their dose and go on about their lives. What happens when [hurricane] Katrina hits and then methadone clinics were closed? I'll tell you what happens. You go into the worst detox — crippling detox... I had a friend of mine who was thrown in jail during Katrina, and he was on... whatever milligram... It doesn't matter how many milligrams you're on; you're on it. He had to detox in jail, and he was so goddamn pathetic, they had to throw him in the hole by himself — take him out of the populace. The only way I can describe coming off methadone is falling from a 50-story building every three minutes of your life. Every three minutes of your life is terrifying. That's why people can't come off. You get me? It's fear. . . Once you start chasing your tail, no matter how great you were, how great you are, or whatever you think... it don't matter what the magazines say, it don't matter what your fans say; it matters what's going on with you. There's two points: high and sick. High and sick. What happens in between? Huh? Fucking zero. Zero. Lest you're out on the road, like me, and you've gotta get up in front of 20,000 people and make a rolicking ass of yourself. And get judged in print — your whole life. Microcosm in some crappy, glossy-page metal magazine. That ain't no epitaph, bro. That ain't no epitaph, ladies and gents. No way."

On how long he's been sober:

Anselmo: "Sober is a harsh word." [Interviewer clarifies: "When was the last time you picked up the needle."] "Now that is a hardcore story. I was with a friend of mine. I was home with dope. This was 2002, or 2003... I'm not gonna guess anymore, but somewhere around there. And this friend of mine, we used to party back in the day — shoot dope all the time. This guy was a little bit of a follower. Smart guy. Extremely talented. Anyway, me and him were together, we were speeding down the highway — a pitch-dark highway in Louisiana somewhere on our way to a gig. And there's two guys driving upfront. And he tells me, 'Man, I'd like to party tonight.' And I'm sitting there thinking to myself, 'Wow, it's been awhile, man. You sure? You sure?' 'Yeah, I'm sure.' So, me being the medical genius I am back then, I gave him what I'd call a 'pussy shot' — a little bit; just a little touch. And I injected him. I asked him, 'How're you feeling, bro?' And he was, like, [speaking slowly], 'Good, man.' Someone upfront asked me a question — just like that; that quick — and I turned around, I answered, I turned back around, and this dude was stiff, his eyes were closed and his lips were like that [pushing his lips together], tight. And I said, 'Hey!' I called his name several times. No answer. Boom. I'm freaking out. I grab this dude, and he is as rigid as rigor mortis. And I'm grabbing him and I'm shaking him and shaking him and I'm pulling his beard and I'm slapping his face, and I grabbed the ice cooler and I reached down his damn pants, I'm putting ice down his pants. My friend, who I've known since I was 16 years old, is overdosing. Ain't no damn hospital! Speeding down the back roads of Louisiana. I'm looking around and I'm freaking. I don't know where to tell these guys to drive, and my friend, he's dead. I freaked out and I went [makes punching motion] right in his chest. Boom. His eyes popped open. One pupil was looking this way and the other one this way — kind of like the actor Marty Feldman. And I was scared, man. He wasn't back yet, man; he looked crazy. I was thinking brain damage, retardation... I didn't know what was going on, [so] I hit him again. And his eyes went right back together. And I'm like, 'Oh, my God.' I stayed awake with him all night long. He was sleepy. Kept trying to dose off. Probably still loaded. Boom, I'd kick him. We got back to my house. I laid him out on my sofa. We stayed up 'till the sun came up. I stayed up with him. I wouldn't let him go to sleep. And this whole time, I'm sitting there thinking to myself, 'I just killed my best friend and brought him back to life.' No, I ain't a saint. I ain't no saint, man. I'm the king of liars. I'm the king of deceit. It's what heroin makes you. It's what dope makes you. Cocaine, heroin... whatever. They all go hand in hand. They're all in the same boat, and that boat sinks. It's got holes in it. And that was the last time I ever picked that damn needle up. That was the last time I did heroin."

On some of the lasting effects heroin has had on him:

Anselmo: "Lasting effects? It depends on the person. I still have friends that have been clean longer than I have, and they still have dreams about it. That's very common, too. They go to certain parts of town and they're like, 'Oh, man, that's right where I used to cop [drugs]. That's where I used to go — right down that alley, meet this guy,' and then tell the whole story. It's constant. It's constantly in your brain in one form or another. With me? I know it as enemy. That's why I'm here today, honestly. 'Cause you can't fight heroin. The only way to fight, I figure, is to wisen you people up now. And that's tough, man. 'Cause when you're in your 20s — early 20s and shit like that — your will is aloof. 'Cause your will is your path. And all I suggest is you navigate slowly. Because life is going to test you anyway. Ain't none of us born with a silver spoon, really. It don't matter what walk of life you're from, life is going to test you anyway. And point being, if you're gonna go ahead and cripple yourself on dope, number one, you're not gonna be equipped to deal with life's tests, and number two, you're either gonna end up in jail or in the morgue. And I've seen it all. I've toured with hundreds of bands; I've seen hundreds of addictions. PANTERA... Still... Still... Don't you even imagine this ain't true, and if you do, you'd better wake up and apologize — we were the hardest-drinking band on the planet. Hands down. And I'll tell you what: If Dimebag were alive today, he'd be in some severe medical difficulty, because Rex [Brown], the bass player — my bass player — drank himself so stupid, he's got pancreatitis now. He's 42 years old. 42 years old and pancreatitis.... You know what that means? That means if he takes a sip of a wine cooler, he has no idea if it's going to kill him or not. Kill him. And at one point, yeah, he was acting just like a junkie. Hiding bottles. Hiding, hiding, hiding. Any of you watch that show 'Intervention' [on the A&E network]? It's entertaining, isn't it? It's true. It's real. Rex was like any alcoholic on that damn show. He lived in California, and I swear to you, the night the entire band was going to meet and have an intervention with my bass player, he had already done himself in. And at this point... Look, man, I'm not gonna talk about the negative after this, because there is a positive side... This dude [Rex] has probably spent over a hundred thousand dollars on high-dollar, high-class detox centers. Medical help-me centers, you know. The first three times he went... 'I'm doing it for my kids.' 'I'm doing it to save my marriage,' the next time. 'I'm doing it to get back in the band,' the third time. Guess what?! Nothing worked. You know why? You've got to do it for yourself, and you have got to want it for yourself. You can speak all the language you want, 'cause you'll hear it out of the addicts. 'Oh, yeah yeah yeah, man. Oh, I'm fine.' [Addressing his mother] Mommy — my mom's here — how many times did I tell you, 'I'm fine' and I was full of shit? Hundreds? Thousands? She's telling the truth."

If you go onto youtube, you can see the footage of the interview.

I'm not claiming to be a saint. It is just hard to find out how big of junkies some of your music idols are/were. It's not a secret that Pantera drank and smoked dope. I guess there is always that part of you that wants to deny that they'd do worse than that. Sadly, there are quite a few musicians and other entertainers that are in way over their heads and don't realize it. Michael Jackson is an easy example. Layne Staley is another. Everyday you hear of more examples. At times I feel like I've wasted my time looking up to these people. I guess you need to separate the person from the music they create. It just isn't that easy sometimes.

I hope that if you or someone you know are on drugs, you get some help. It doesn't seem like that road leads anywhere good.

(wow--did I just turn into my dad?)

that concludes my rant. I figured I'd weigh in with my thoughts. Personally, I wish him all the luck in the world. If he wants to play, let him play. I know it's hard to think of Brett wearing a Vikings uniform. At his press conference it felt like bizarro world. There was Brett, looking like he always looks (Does he not have any other hats?), but holding up a purple #4 jersey. Part of me hopes that he does good, just because of all the years he gave the Packers. But he can't do too good, otherwise it will harm the Packers season. Basically, I'm not sweating Brett being a Viking. I've heard people act like this is a personal insult, but it's just a game. If Brett was still capable of being the old Brett, he would be wearing the green and gold yet. If the Vikings beat the Packers, it will be a team effort, not just the quarterback. No matter what, it's going to be interesting.!

cd pick of the day--Nebula--Heavy Psych

It's about time

I hope that the Sports Machete forgives me for stepping on his toes a bit, but I am going to post about the Milwaukee Brewers. Today they finally made some moves that hopefully gets the team headed in the right direction. JJ Hardy got sent to the minors. Bill Hall is pretty much done and they fired pitching coach Bill Castro. It's about time. The pitching has been struggling for the most part since June. While the Hardy move isn't the most popular in my household, it's going to be for the better. My daughter likes JJ and she cried when I told her the news. Bill Hall won't be missed. He could not get anything going the last three years! I have a feeling that this won't be the end of the moves either. Next year, I doubt Corey Hart will be around, unless he finds a magic bat somewhere and starts hitting. Mike Cameron is done too. He might be solid defensively, but he does nothing at the plate. Last night was the first time I've seen him hit the ball solidly in a long time. Usually it's just strike three! Trevor Hoffman must be loving life right now. He's getting paid for not working. The Brewers are on such a slide that they don't need a closer! I have a feeling that the slogan for the Timber Rattlers will apply for the Brewers next year. New Crew, more fun. There will be a lot of house cleaning before it's all done.

Justin, you now can post a column about music once, instead of sports!

cd pick of the day--Municipal Waste--3 song sampler from new album, Massive Aggressive

Hatebreed!

Thanks to everyone who came out to the Decimation of the Nation tour. All of the bands were killer and I think they were very happy with the turnout. The crowd was into it from the get-go and that makes for an awesome show. I did not know that Winds of Plague were that popular. Chimaira put down a solid set. They were a great opener for Hatebreed. Everyone was primed by the time Jamey and crew came out. Hatebreed played all of their big songs and a cover of Ghosts of War by Slayer. Good set. The crowd was rabid all night. The pit was intense. A couple of questions popped into my head during the night. What was with the guy wearing the jumpsuit? That had to be mega hot wearing that! Is Jamey Jasta going to come out with his own brand of hard core aerobics? Some of those moves were humorous. Will more bands of this caliber please come to Green Bay?

Extra thanks to the people rocking the shirts by local bands. At my other job, all of the radios that have cd players are broken. I decide to try and jack up one that has a cassette player and it suprisingly works! Today I took it back into the late 80s. I started off with Ozzy's The Ultimate Sin. Next were the second-tier thrashers Overkill. Under the Influence is a thrash masterpiece. The coup de grace of the day was listening to Pantera's Power Metal. This was the first one with Phil in the band. This is before they found their power groove sound. Regardless, it is still awesome. Diamond Darrell shreds like a king (like always)! Phil's singing (yes singing) is similar to that of Cemetary Gates, throughout the whole album. The lyrics aren't as mature as their latter material. You can judge by the song titles: Rock the World, Power Metal, Proud to be Loud, Burnnn!, and P*S*T*88. According to the liner notes, the lyrics to the last song are invisible. "When the beast of Pantera runs loose words as such do not exist!" Too funny. It was definitely a different time for music. The hair bands were in control and Pantera was trying to bridge the gap. The album cover shows the band with some poofy, horrible looking hair. Vinnie Paul needs to reissue this and earlier Pantera albums on cd! I love hearing new music, but it is fun to revisit the past and see where all of the modern metal came from. I plan on throwing down some more with Old School Wednesday.

There is tons of great new metal out there: New Megadeth, Suicide Silence, Church of Misery, Warbringer, Obituary, Devildriver, Killswitch Engage, Arkaea. New albums from Slayer, Anthrax, Hatebreed, and Municipal Waste on the horizon. Now I just need the time to listen to it all.

Local bands have started to step it up. I've started to receive some new local music and I will work it into the Local Edge, Sunday nights at 7.

album of the day--Pantera Power Metal

Local bands

This post is directed towards all of the local bands in the area. What's up? It seems like we are going through a dry spell in regards to getting some new music. Is everyone working on something new? I haven't even seen too many schedules for upcoming shows either. Summer is here. I know that everyone is booking shows. Why not send your schedule to the razor? I can't help promote your band if I don't have your music or your schedule. Simple as that. Send all info about the status of your band to razor@wcinet.com For those bands that have kept me in the loop, thank you. It makes everything easier. Hatebreed and Chimaira--August 3 at the Riverside Ballroom. This show will be intense. It has something for every metalhead. Thrash, death, hardcore--it will all be represented that night. There should be five bands playing that night and it might be the gnarliest pit the Riverside has ever seen. I can not think of a heavier show at the place and it has the potential to totally insane. If you are into metal, you owe to yourself to come to this show. No excuses! This Saturday on Over the Edge, I will be playing some brand new Killswitch Engage. Thanks to the fine citizens at Roadrunner Records, I was able to obtain a brand new song called Reckoning. I think you will enjoy it. Also, I should be able to get some new Slayer on the show. Get it right--Slaaaaaaaaaaaayerrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How's that for metal? New Killswitch Engage and Slayer--plus new music from Dream Theater and a band called Dirtfedd. Over the Edge is Saturday nights from 10 to midnight. Don't forget--The Local Edge is Sunday nights at 7. One hour of local music from North East Wisconsin. That's what's going on!

This Weekend

Coming out this weekend on Saturday is Over the Edge at 10 pm. We will debut some new metal from Hatebreed and Chimaira. Hatebreed has a cd of cover songs coming out on Tuesday and we will be playing their version of Slayer's Ghost of War. Chimaira's new cd The Infection is in stores and this will get you even more pumped for Music As A Weapon. Sunday night at 7 is The Local Edge. We will discuss the WAMIs. They were awarded this past Monday. Also, I'll fill you in on some local battle of the bands coming up.

cd pick of the day--Hatebreed--For the Lions

They actually are using music as a weapon

I read an article in the Wall Street Journal about an area in Nevada that is preparing for the annual invasion from the Mormon Cricket. Check it out here. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124052112850249691.html

It sounds like there are millions of them. They even use a snowplow to clear them off the road! The thing that interested me is when they were talking about using hard rock to drive them away. They said they might even come up with a playlist to combat the pesky creatures. Off the top of my head, I came up with a few songs that would help.

1. Pantera-- By Demons be driven
2. Prong-- Snap your fingers, snap your neck
3. Superjoint Ritual-- Creepy crawl
4. Gwar-- Maggots
5. Slayer--Metalstorm/Face the Slayer
6. Carcass-- Keep on Rotting in the Free World
7. Napalm Death-- Suffer the Children
8. Cathedral-- Enter the Worms
9. Metallica-- Creeping Death
10. Deicide-- Dead by Dawn

Those were just a couple I thought of. Naturally, they could just put any Slayer cd on repeat, but I think that would kill everyone's lawn.

cd pick of the day--White Zombie-- La Sexorcisto. There is so much more to this than Thunderkiss and Black Sunshine

Infomerc-Hell

With the jobs I have, I watch tv at odd hours of the day. It never fails that there is either one or both of these infomercials on. The first one is for cleaning your colon! The host is some creepy looking guy who looks like he just got done working 9 to 5 at the morgue. I've only could handle watching a couple of minutes but I know he talks about the frequency and size of your bowel movements. I think I even saw a picture of a turd. Great! That is exactly what I like to be thinking about at 4 in the morning. The other infomercial is for some boner pills. According to the show, it seems like every male they talk to on the street take these pills. Who knew? The sleazy looking chicks that are the hosts are way into it and sound like they would never even consider having a relationship with someone who does not enhance. Imagine explaining that to your friends. Suzi decided to go out with me because I started taking boner pills, not because she actually likes me! I guess the infomercials for Tae Bo and the Veg-a-matic are just too boring these days. At least I can always just bypass the infomercials and turn the channel. I heard the are showing videos on MTV again. I could watch those videos, but I'm not sure what is worse: the infomercials or what passes as popular music these days.

cd pick of the day--Kreator-- Hordes of Chaos. It is thrashtastic!!!

The Weasel

What's going on? This is my first blog ever. The powers that be gave me the hook up so now I will ocassionally give you a glimpse into my world and things that intrigue me (and probably bore you!).

Over the weekend I took my wife on a long overdue date to go see Pauly Shore. He was performing at the Comedy Quarter in Neenah (as one overzealous fan needed to remind Pauly everytime he said he was in Appleton). It was a funny show. He did a little bit of his Weasel routine and mixed it in with a lot of self-depracating remarks. Pauly has matured a bit, but he still remembers where he came from. I know some people laughed when I told them I was going to see Pauly Shore (they're too cool?), but everyone had a good time. I think I might have scored a few points with my wife by finally taking her out on a date for the first time in a while.

Saturday was also National Record Store day. Kudos to those who remembered! I did my part and hit up the local record shop. On my way out, I run into a Mr. John Jordan. I think he was following me because that was the second time that day we ran into each other. Hmmm..... I did my part by making a few purchases. I was very excited to pick up the Exclusive Slayer vinyl that was released that day. It's a new song called Psychopathy Red. Look for it on Over the Edge soon!!

Glad to see the Brewers finally could will one again!

cd pick of the day-- Lamb of God--Wrath
