Drowning Pool/Union Undgerground/New Medicine news

How did I miss the news that Ryan McCombs was out of Drowning Pool? I thought they were a great fit together. Then again, I thought Ryan sounded great with Soil. We'll see where he pops up next. I think he should do a solo project or something where he can call the shots more. I really hope Drowning Pool finds a singer that can keep the ball rolling for them. Just the amount of success they've had, with three different singers is impressive. Who will be lead singer #4? By the way, raise your hand if you're a sinner! (raise your hand if you saw them at Ryan's in support of Sinner! Awesome show!)

Former Union Underground singer Bryan Scott has finally gotten the ball rolling on his new project, Cult to Follow. He sent me the following:

I checked out the song. It sounds pretty good. I can't wait for the full length.

I was in contact with the booking agency for New Medicine suggesting places they could play in the area. It sounds like they are working on something. The guy that I spoke with said that maybe in March they would have something lined up. I hope it happens. I really like New Medicine. Make sure you check out the cd!

Merry Christmas! Whether you get the lump of coal or the new Lexus, enjoy the holidays!

cd pick of the day--Only Flesh From the gutter to the grave This one is kind of weird, in a Dog Fashion Disco type of way. I'm very intrigued by it.

My trip to Florida aka How I saw Justin Bieber and Jennifer Hudson

Last week, my wife and I headed to Florida with the kids. Nobody noticed I was gone, by the way. Thanks! Anyhow, we did the Disney thing. They were filming their holiday special to air on Christmas day while we were there (it's not live? Shocking!). Being the Radio/TV/Film nerd that I am, we had to check it out. The first day, Scotty McCreery (sp) and Jennifer Hudson were performing their Christmas songs. I seriously thought about trying to start a circle pit while Hudson performed Joy to the World, but I knew I would get a lifetime ban from the Magic Kingdom. Classic line from my wife as I told her about wanting to start the circle pit. "I have no idea what you're talking about." So there we were in Disney as I explained to her the crazy dancing in a circle along with the brutality that goes on at metal shows. I did throw the devil horns up. I can't wait to see if that footage gets on the air. The second day, the rumors were true. Justin Bieber was there, doing a two song medley. The teenage girls were going crazy. I couldn't bring myself to fake enthusiasm during his songs, no matter how many tv cameras were filming. He filmed his stuff a couple of times and he was gone. Never in my life did I think I'd see Justin Bieber or Jennifer Hudson in concert. I think my last vacation was way cooler when Avenged Sevenfold, Hellyeah, New Medicine, Halestorm, and others were performing at the arena right next to the hotel I was staying at. Much better!

Good Nonpoint new/Bad Nonpoint News

Hey Nonpoint fans!!!

News broke over the weekend that Nonpoint got rid of their guitarist Zach Broderick and founding bassist Ken MacMillan. That's the bad news. I know I'll miss seeing KB playing bass and screaming along with the words of the songs. Hopefully they will have some replacements soon.

Now the good--Nonpoint recently signed to Razor & Tie records and are working on a new cd. I'm curious what direction they are headed with the lineup change.

Nonpoint played the Taste of Madison in September. It was estimated that 6,000 people were there. Where's the love for Nonpoint in the Valley? Nonpoint was one of the first Razor bands. I'm trying to remember how many times they played Ryan's and the Riverside ballroom in Green Bay. Killer shows every time. What a day what a day what a day....

cd pick of the day--New Medicine--Race you to the Bottom You need to check out this disc. I listened to it today and envisioned them playing a low dough show at JJ's. How to make that happen? Razor fans show some support for new bands!

Straight from the source!

I've been in touch with Shaun Glass about the upcoming Soil tour of the UK. They got Ryan, their former singer, now in Drowning Pool, to do the tour to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their album Scars. I wasn't sure if it was a full out reunion of that line-up, so I asked Shaun about it. Here's his response:

Pete
Hey all is well as were gearing up for a new tour with Kitttie mid aug til late sept.I have no idea nor care about my former band.News on DW ep and new album soon!
Shaun

I guess that settles it. After that, I finally heard the new Dirge Within song and I gave him some feedback. His response:

So glad you dig it! I think know ya know why I am not going backwards aka soil lol.Sooo glad you dig the entombed track as It is a classic that I felt no one has paid homage too.Glad Razor is loving the DW and anything ya all need let me know. The full ep will only be digital via I TUNES AMAZON etc for now.
Cheers
Shaun

No More Beefcake the Mighty!

Here's a story I stole from Blabbermouth.net

CASEY ORR Announces His Departure From GWAR - Aug. 2, 2011
GWAR bassist Casey Orr (a.k.a. Beefcake The Mighty) has released the following statement to BLABBERMOUTH.NET:"After much soul searching and consideration, and with a heavy heart, I am announcing my departure from GWAR (yes, again). I simply can no longer devote the time and effort required to maintain my position within the group. I have so many projects going on now in Texas, including a new RIGOR MORTIS record in the works, that it just wouldn't be fair to everyone involved for me to stay and not be able to give 100%. I'll miss the insanity and playing with my brothers, but I have to do what's right for me right now."I wish GWAR and all my brothers the best, and if I can ever be of any help to the group, they know they have only to ask. I appreciate their understanding, and certainly hope the fans will understand as well. I truly appreciate the opportunity I was given to return to the band and record the last two albums and to tour with them over the last several years, but it's time to aim my creative energies in other directions and embrace the opportunities that have been laid before me. I promise you have not heard the last of me. Not by a long shot!"

My opinion: While this won't be the end of Gwar by any means (it would take Oderous leaving), it still sucks. Beefcake the Mighty is the largest thing in the universe!

We will have some special old school edge featuring Gwar in tribute to Beefcake Saturday night starting at nine!

cd pick of the day: Pantera--Cowboys from Hell. Need I say anything more?

Macho Man R.I.P.

I'm sure by now you all know that the Macho Man Randy Savage passed away after a car accident and possible heart attack in Florida. Macho Man was an awesome wrestler and performer. His match from Wrestlemania 3 with Ricky Steamboat is one of the greatest of all time. If you have never seen it, go find a copy of it right now and enjoy! I am not suprised by all of the outpouring of condolences from fellow wrestlers, but I am a little amazed by the tributes from places like ESPN. They don't typically mention wrestling at all. The segment I saw even talked about how they are tremendous athletes! The only interaction I came close to having with the Macho Man was back in the day at UW-Oshkosh. I'm the big fanboy who would sit out back and wait for the wrestlers to show up and ask for autographs. I know, I'm a huge nerd. Macho Man was the big star of the show. They had campus security escort him to and from his car, so I never got his autograph, but I did get some sweet photos from about 3 feet away. I will have to do some searching and find them so I can post them online. There will only be one Macho Man. Hopefully now the WWE will do the right thing and induct him into their Hall of Fame. So, take some time and watch some classic Macho Man matches and snap into a Slim Jim in his honor!

On a side note, I know it's been said before, but it's sad how many of the wrestlers I grew up on have passed on to the big ring in the sky. Hopefully this trend ends!

15 years

I realized today that it's been 15 years since I graduated college. Yes, I actually did go to college for broadcasting. Was it worth it? In some aspects yes, in others no. I've seen guys with no experience come in off the street and get a job (Rex--you live across the street from me!). I could have saved a lot of time and pursued a career years earlier. On the other hand, I wouldn't have met my wife, made lifelong friends (Ross, Wade, Nate, etc...), and had countless memorable experiences. I think that overcomes any negatives. A lot has changed in the time since I've graduated. My mullet is gone. I have a wife, kids, and a dog. Stuff I never thought about much in those days. I guess that you never know what life is going to give you, but everything gets you ready for the next step. It's not often you can remember what you were doing 15 years ago. I know I was at the beer gardens getting prepared to graduate!! It's crazy how things change and they stay the same.

cd pick of the day--Hank III Hillbilly Joker Rowdy crazed rock/metal from the grandson of Hank Williams. You need this cd!

Big Weekend

It's almost the weekend. The anticipation has been building all week and everyone is fired up. That's right. It's almost time for another edition of Over the Edge. This week, check out new bangers from:

Bronx Casket Co
EkoTren
Grand Magus
Kings Destroy
Helstar

Plus, tune in for your chance to text in to win tickets to As I lay Dying. That show is at the Riverside Ballroom in Green Bay on February 17. Winds of Plague and After the Burial are the openers. Metal in Green Bay!! Over the Edge in on Saturdays from 9 to 11 pm.

Something else must be going on this weekend too. Hmmmmmmmm I seem to recall something about a football game. They should really start hyping these things. I really hope the Packers come out and dominate from the get go. Don't give the Bears any openings. I expect it to be a good game. If the Packers would happen to falter, it would be a huge let down. It would also make a lot of so called experts look silly. Let's keep hoping we are Super Bowl bound! I envision the Packers and the Steelers for the crown. That would be epic!~

cd pick of the day--Buckcherry--Timebomb I haven't listened to this in a long time. There are a lot of great songs on here. Ridin', Timebomb, Porno Star, Whiskey in the Morning.... Yeah Yea!

cd pick of the day--Fu Manchu--Eatin Dust It's an ep, but they really have the fuzzed out guitar working overtime on this one. The cover of Godzilla is heavy as a heavy thing and the song Pigeontoe delivers it home. Essential!
